You should plant what you like to eat. If you dont like spinach, then don't plant it. That being said, you can plant almost anything! Perennials will be dependent upon the zone that you are located in. This will effect perennial herbs, fruits, and trees.

Some plants like a cooler temperature than others and some have a longer growing season.
